Growth mindset is a concept that describes how people view their abilities and potential. It is based on the idea that intelligence and skills are not fixed, but can be developed and improved through learning and effort. People who have a growth mindset believe that they can overcome challenges and achieve their goals by working hard and seeking feedback. They see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow, not as a sign of weakness or lack of talent.

People who have a growth mindset are more likely to:

  • Enjoy learning new things and exploring new topics
  • Embrace challenges and persist in the face of obstacles
  • Seek feedback and use it to improve their performance
  • Celebrate the success of others and learn from their strategies
  • Have a positive attitude and a high self-esteem

Growth mindset was proposed by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck and her colleagues in the 1990s, after studying how students responded to different types of praise. They found that praising students for their effort, rather than their ability, encouraged them to adopt a growth mindset and to perform better in academic tasks.

Growth mindset can be developed and cultivated by anyone, regardless of age, background, or experience. Some ways to develop a growth mindset are:

  • Replace fixed mindset statements with growth mindset statements. For example, instead of saying “I can’t do this”, say “I can’t do this yet”.
  • Set realistic and specific goals that challenge you and help you grow. For example, instead of saying “I want to be good at math”, say “I want to learn how to solve this type of problem”.
  • Celebrate your progress and effort, not just your outcomes. For example, instead of saying “I got an A on the test”, say “I studied hard for the test and learned a lot”.
  • Seek constructive feedback and use it to improve your skills. For example, instead of saying “I don’t understand this”, say "Can you explain this to me or give me some tips?"
