การแข่งขันโต้วาที คือการที่มีผู้พูดสองฝ่ายตอบโต้กันเกี่ยวกับหัวข้อหรือประเด็นใดประเด็นหนึ่ง โดยมีเหตุผลและข้อมูลสนับสนุนการพูดของตนเอง และพยายามหักล้างหรือคัดค้านการพูดของฝ่ายตรงข้าม โดยมีกรรมการคอยตัดสินว่าฝ่ายใดชนะ การแข่งขันโต้วาที เป็นกิจกรรมที่ช่วยพัฒนาทักษะการพูด การฟัง การวิเคราะห์ปัญหา และการใช้เหตุผลได้

การแข่งขันโต้วาทีมีองค์ประกอบหลัก ๆ ดังนี้

• ญัตติ (Proposition) คือหัวข้อหรือประเด็นที่จะถูกโต้วาที เช่น “ควรใช้เสียงให้มากที่สุด” “ควรใช้เสียงให้น้อยที่สุด” เป็นต้น
• ผู้โต้วาที (Debater) คือผู้ที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันโต้วาที แบ่งเป็นสองฝ่าย คือ
  • ฝ่ายเสนอ (Affirmative) คือผู้ที่เห็นด้วยกับญัตติ
  • ฝ่ายค้าน (Negative) คือผู้ที่ไม่เห็นด้วยกับญัตติ
• กรรมการ (Judge) คือผู้ที่มีหน้าที่ให้คะแนนและตัดสินผู้ชนะในการแข่งขันโต้วาที
• เวลา (Time) คือระยะเวลาที่กำหนดให้แต่ละฝ่ายได้พูด
