Central Sterile Supply Division, or CSSD, is a department in hospitals and health care facilities that performs sterilization and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables. It is also responsible for providing sterile supplies to various areas of the hospital, such as the operating room, the wards, and the outpatient clinics. CSSD helps to prevent cross infection and ensure safe patient care

Some of the functions and activities of CSSD are:

• Cleaning, disinfecting, and inspecting reusable medical equipment, such as surgical instruments, trays, basins, etc.
• Sterilizing medical equipment using different methods, such as steam, ethylene oxide gas, or hydrogen peroxide plasma.
• Storing and distributing sterile medical equipment in a controlled environment.
• Monitoring and recording the effectiveness of the sterilization process.
• Providing consulting services to other departments on sterile processing issues.

CSSD is divided into five major areas: decontamination, assembly and processing, sterilizing, sterile storage, and distribution.
