2 | Nonverbal communication is the transmission of information without the use of words or spoken language. It can occur in various ways, including through facial expressions, gestures, body posture or position, eye contact, physical proximity, and other nonverbal cues . In fact, some researchers suggest that the percentage of nonverbal communication is four times that of verbal communication, with 80% of what we communicate involving our actions and gestures versus only 20% being conveyed with the use of words . Research has identified nine types of nonverbal communication : Facial expressions: Facial expressions are responsible for a significant proportion of nonverbal communication. Consider how much information can be conveyed with a smile or a frown. While nonverbal communication and behavior can vary dramatically between cultures, the facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, and fear are similar throughout the world . Gestures: Deliberate movements and signals are an important way to communicate meaning without words. Common gestures include waving, pointing, and giving a “thumbs up” sign. Other gestures are arbitrary and related to culture . Paralinguistics: Paralinguistics refers to vocal communication that is separate from actual language. This includes factors such as tone of voice, loudness, inflection, and pitch . Body language: Body language refers to the nonverbal signals that we use to communicate. This can include posture, stance, and subtle movements such as crossing one’s legs or tapping one’s foot . Proxemics: Proxemics refers to the study of how people use space to communicate. This includes how close we stand to others when we talk to them and how we use physical space to convey meaning . Eye gaze: Eye gaze refers to the direction and amount of eye contact that people use when communicating. Eye contact can convey interest, attention, and involvement in a conversation . Haptics: Haptics refers to the study of touch as a form of communication. Touch can convey a wide range of emotions and meanings depending on the context in which it occurs . Appearance: Appearance refers to how people present themselves to others through clothing, hairstyle, makeup, and other factors . Artifacts: Artifacts refer to objects that we use to communicate nonverbally. This can include things like jewelry, accessories, and even furniture . |
